General Practitioners Training Scheme

Doctors wishing to become general practitioners are required to spend 1 year working in general practice. These doctors are experienced in hospital medicine. 

Other Doctors

You may occasionally be invited to see an experienced doctor who is assisting us when a permanent doctor is away on leave. The receptionist will keep you informed when you make your appointment.

Lead Nurse

The Practice Nurses hold clinics on Mondays to Fridays by appointment at both surgeries.

The Practice Manager is available to answer questions regarding the running of the Practice and to help with any matters of complaint. We welcome suggestions on how we can improve medical services to the community.

We have a team of experienced receptionists who deal with appointments and enquiries on the telephone and at reception. Receptionists will not divulge information concerning patients to a third party, as this is strictly confidential and can only be given to the patient concerned.

Nurse Practitioner

Our experienced Nurse Practitioner triages via the telephone requests for same day appointments and emergencies, she is able to offer both same day and routine availability to see patients in the surgery or to speak to them on the telephone or can arrange appointments with the GPs if necessary. She is also able to prescribe medication and to refer on for further care if appropriate.

All doctors share maternity care with the community midwives at RUH.  You can leave a message for the midwives at their office at the Princess Anne Wing at the RUH on Bath 825973.

The midwives look after you in your pregnancy from approximately 12 weeks when you first meet to have your booking appointment at home or hospital. Generally pregnant women see the Midwife about once a month until later on in the pregnancy when the appointments become more frequent (this depends on individual need).

All women receive post natal visits from their Community Midwife once they are home with their baby, helping with breastfeeding, baby care and support. These visits last until around 10 days after birth when care is handed over to your Health visitor.

Along with monitoring your health and wellbeing in the pregnancy the team can advise you on tests in pregnancy, classes, diet, exercise and preparation for labour and parenthood.

The District Nurses attached to this practice are employed by Sirona.  Our team consists of a District Nursing Sister, three Community Staff Nurses and a Health Care Assistant. They are based at the Beehive Surgery in Mount Road and they cover patients who are registered at both St. Michael’s and the Beehive surgeries.

The District Nursing Team provide nursing care for people who are housebound that cannot attend the surgery or where there is a valid reason why home visits are appropriate.

What district nurses do:

• Wound assessment and care
• Health needs assessment
• Palliative care
• Support and advice for carers
• Chronic disease management
• Referral to other community services e.g. social services
• Health promotion
• District nurses enable patients to care for themselves and be as independent as possible

What district nurses don’t do:

• Collect and deliver prescriptions
• Collect and deliver continence pads
• Administer medication e.g. tablets and eye drops
• Personal hygiene, bathing and toileting
• Wound checking – unless there is a problem
• District Nurses should not be used as an Emergency Service

The District Nurses work from 8.30am – 5.00pm Monday to Friday and can be contacted at the Beehive Surgery on 01225 404880. It is vital that you phone as early as possible if you require a visit that day. Please leave a message on their answer phone if they are out visiting patients and it will be picked up on their return to the surgery.

Community Matron

Community Matrons are experienced nurses who work closely with GPs, District Nurses and other community based services such as therapists to help you stay as well as possible, for as long as possible. They are experts in assessing complex medical problems and supporting people who live with long-term conditions. Dorothy House nurses in the community also provide support for anyone over the age of 18 (and their family or carer) with active, progressive and advanced disease which is life-limiting.

Health visitors are trained in preventative medicine and health promotion. They offer advice, information and support about many health and social issues. A health visitor can visit you in your own home by appointment, or at one of the local Baby Feeding Hubs offering support:

Help, support and counselling is available from Southside Family Project.

Various counselling services are available at Southside Family Project who are based at Meade House, Wedgewood Road, Bath. Patients can self-refer. Their contact telephone number is Bath 331243.

Community Physiotherapy

If you need to see a physiotherapist, you do not need to see a doctor first. You can self-refer to either the St Martin's Hospital by filling in a referral form from reception or booking to see our physio at St Michaels.

Please be aware that appointments are limited however, and there can be a waiting list to be seen.

Community Podiatrist

Clinics are held every Friday at St. Michael’s Surgery. Patients can self-refer to this clinic. Collect a referral form from St. Michael’s Reception.
